This unusual-looking car is based on the MGB Roadster, with a turbocharged powertrain supplied by a Ford Mustang SVO and a host of other changes, including a new fiberglass body and upgraded brakes.

The MGB is one of the most prolific British sports cars in history, with over 500,000 produced between 1962 and 1980. Due to the high production numbers, the model is remarkably affordable today and is a popular choice for performance modifications, wide body kits and various engine swaps .

  • The MGB was launched in 1962 originally in Roadster (convertible) configuration, the MGB GT hardtop variant came in late 1965. The car was originally developed to have independent front and four-link rear suspension, a modern V4 engine and a rigid unibody shell . It would eventually get a unibody but no V4 or upgraded rear suspension.
  • Arriving in dealerships in 1962, the MGB was powered by a 1.8-litre BMC B-Series engine, a simple overhead-valve inline-four producing around 95bhp. The later version of the MGB would be offered with a 3.5-litre Rover V8, and the closely related MGC was powered by a 2.9 liter C-Series inline six.
  • Many MGB owners felt that the 1.8 liter engine let the car down somewhat, and countless engine swaps were completed as a result. MGBs are still usually fairly cheap to buy, so they make popular project cars.
  • The MGB Roadster you see here has been comprehensively rebuilt, now powered by a Ford Mustang SVO powertrain, with a fiberglass bodykit, wider wheels and tires, upgraded brakes and a largely new interior.
  • The car is now being offered for sale from Fort Pierce, FL with 17,000 miles on the odometer, a top trunk lid, replacement parts, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name on Bring a Trailer.

MGB Heart Transplantation

When the MGB was first developed as a successor to the earlier MGA, it’s clear that the engineering department put everything they had into the mix to make it an advanced sports car by the standards of the time.

As originally designed, the MGB was to have a new V4 engine, independent front suspension with a four-link design at the rear and a rigid steel unibody shell – no body-on-chassis structure. Unfortunately, as is often the case during the development phase of new cars, many of these new features were left on the drawing room floor.

When the MGB was launched in 1962, it was powered by a respectable 95bhp BMC B-series 1.8-litre inline-four. The car received praise for its good looks, affordable MSRP and handling, but was criticized for its performance.

As a result, the MGB has long been a popular target for engine swaps, a Rover V8 is often fitted, but some prefer a Chevrolet or Ford V8, others still opt for a V6, and at least one person is bolted in a straight Jaguar XK-six. The car featured in this article is the first MG we’ve seen with a Mustang SVO engine, and it has to be said that it fits well under the hood – probably better than most V8s.

Drive Ford Mustang SVO

For the uninitiated, the Ford Mustang SVO was a limited edition version of the third generation “Fox Body” Mustang that was sold between 1984 and 1986. Fewer than 10,000 were produced and it was a controversial car at the time because it was powered by a turbocharged inline-four rather than the more traditional V8.

In some ways, the SVO Mustang was a sign of things to come, with the current production version of the Mustang offering a turbocharged 2.3-liter Ecoboost inline-four—an option that has proven popular both in the U.S. and around the world.

Description of the pictureWith its new front and rear fiberglass bodywork and flared wheel arches, the car looks almost indistinguishable from the humble British roadster it started out as.

Due to the compact nature of the SVO engine, it is a great swap candidate for other cars with a 5-speed manual transmission still attached. Power output is respectable by Eighties standards, with 175bhp at 4400rpm and 210lb ft of torque at 3000rpm – definitely a big upgrade over the original MGB mill.

Completion of the construction

After the engine swap was completed, this car received a comprehensive fiberglass body kit consisting of a new front end, a new hood, a new trunk area, and widened front and rear wheel arches. A new white folding roof and a new white/beige interior were fitted.

The car now rides on 15” Super Sport style wheels shod with 225/50 front and 295/50 rear Kelly Charger tires. Power front discs and rear drums provide stopping power, and the listing states that they were serviced during current ownership and a spare master cylinder was added.

The listing also states that the timing belt, coolant, fuel filter, and battery were replaced after they acquired the vehicle, the air conditioning system was recharged, and an engine tune-up was completed.
